Galileo GNSS applications developing market opportunities for ITS Solutions

The Galileo E-GNSS is expected to create many new market opportunities in many domains including industry and services. Precise positioning, being one asset of the Galileo GNSS, has already enabled precise autonomous driving and piloting of farming machine, increasing significantly yields. The European Galileo GNSS will create numerous new opportunities for ITS applications: easing deployment of autonomous driving through precise positioning or tracking dangerous or expensive goods with reliable and safe positioning services. The session will present the outcome of the JUPITER support actions, financed by the GSA (European GNSS Agency) showing different E-GNSS based applications from SME or local authority explaining the E-GNNS differentiators. The session will also provide an introduction to the expected cost benefit of E-GNSS based application as well as the best practices, which are critical to foster the development of new E-GNSS market opportunities for Intelligent transport systems.

This workshop will be organised in the frame of 2nd IRF Asia Region Congress & Exhibition.

It will present the outcome of the JUPITER support actions, financed by the European GNSS Agency, and highlight different E-GNSS-based applications of relevance to those invested in the industry across the Asian continent. It will also provide an introduction to the expected cost benefit, as well as best practices, which are critical to fostering the development of new E-GNSS market opportunities for intelligent transport systems.

Latin America ITS Meeting Point

The event was jointly organised by the Jupiter Project, the Galileo Information Centre for Latin America (the LATINO project), the City Government of Medellín (Alcaldía de Medellín) and RutaN, which is Medellín government organization to promote entrepreneurship and technological innovation. The event was also supported by Intel Colombia.

 

The programme was conceived as a training session and was focused on highlighting the benefits of applying GNSS, and specially European GNSS, to Intelligent Transport System applications and, by extension, to Smart Cities environments. Apart from the programme components provided by the European Jupiter and LATINO projects, the event included talks from officials from RutaN, the Secretary of Transport from the City Government of Medellín, the National Project to regulate the Colombia ITS Industry and local companies providing ITS and Smart Cities solutions based on locally developed technology. Some of these companies were spin offs from local research institutions (public universities).

The event was attended by some 100 people mostly from local industry and a few from research and, as an aftermath, RutaN is designating a “curator” (curador, in Spanish) in charge of looking after the ITS industry sector in Medellín (and Colombia) identifying business opportunities and linking needs with companies with government and research, leaving the door for European industry to participate in this initiative widely open.
